As part of a comprehensive effort to reform public education, Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has approved the supply of 15,716 new desks for primary schools throughout the state.
Dr. Kassim Muhammed-Kassim, Executive Chairman of the Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), made this announcement during a press briefing in Lafia. He stated that the intervention came in response to widespread infrastructure deficits observed during recent inspection visits.
“I personally visited many schools and saw pupils sitting on bare floors, some using broken chairs, and others standing throughout lessons,” he said. “I took these findings to Governor Sule, who immediately approved the contract for new desks.”
Educa.ng reports that, the governor has also directed that the furniture be delivered within a month to ensure quick deployment to affected schools. This initiative, according to Dr. Muhammed-Kassim, is a significant step toward restoring dignity and effectiveness to classroom learning in Nasarawa.
He described the learning environment in many of the schools as disheartening. “The children want to learn, but the conditions are demotivating. The lack of basic furniture like desks and chairs is an urgent problem,” he said.
Dr. Muhammed-Kassim also reiterated his commitment to active fieldwork and transparency. “I’m not an office chairman. I’m in the field, and I’ve seen what needs to change. And under my leadership, we will change it.”
He expressed confidence that with the support of Governor Sule, public basic education in Nasarawa will become more attractive and conducive to learning, as reported by Educa.ng.
