The Lagos State chapter of the Labour Party has announced that its chairmanship primaries for the upcoming July 12 Local Government elections will take place on Friday, signaling the party’s preparation to field strong candidates across the state.
State Party Chairman, Pastor Dayo Ekong, revealed the schedule during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos. She explained that the primaries would be conducted at the local government level using the indirect mode, relying on a delegate-based voting system to select the party’s flagbearers.
According to Ekong, the councillorship primaries were already underway on Thursday across the state’s various wards, setting the stage for Friday’s chairmanship contest. She emphasized the party’s commitment to maintaining democratic standards throughout the selection process.
“Our councillorship primaries are holding today (Thursday) across all the wards, while the chairmanship primaries are scheduled for Friday in all local government areas,” Ekong stated. “We are committed to conducting free, fair, and transparent primary elections that reflect the will of our members.”
She added that the Labour Party remains optimistic about its prospects in the general council polls, expressing confidence that the party would make significant gains at the grassroots level.
The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has scheduled the local government elections for July 12, covering all 20 constitutionally recognized Local Government Areas and the 37 Local Council Development Areas across the state.
