Yunusa Tanko, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, has firmly stated that former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi remains a member of the Labour Party, addressing rumors of his defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief program on Monday, Tanko refuted the claims, describing them as baseless. He stressed that Obi has not left the Labour Party and is still committed to it.
Tanko also spoke about the recent Supreme Court ruling that removed Julius Abure as the national chairman of the Labour Party, noting that the party’s leadership plans to meet soon to clarify its position. He assured that the meeting would resolve any uncertainties surrounding the issue.
“As of now, Peter Obi remains a member of the Labour Party,” Tanko asserted. “Any changes would be communicated if and when they arise.”
Tanko’s comments come after Adewole Adebayo, the former SDP presidential candidate, suggested that Obi and former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar were in discussions with the SDP, possibly signaling a defection. However, Tanko made it clear that Obi’s association with the Labour Party remains unchanged for now.
