In a visible demonstration of Nigeria’s commitment to regional cooperation and democratic growth in Africa, Vice President Kashim Shettima joined other dignitaries in Libreville, Gabon, on Saturday to witness the swearing-in of President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.
The elaborate inauguration ceremony, held at the Stade de l’Amitié sino-gabonaise, marked a pivotal chapter in Gabon’s post-Bongo era. President Nguema emerged victorious in the April 12, 2025, general elections, triumphing over seven contenders to secure a fresh mandate. He previously held the role of interim President for nearly two years following the ousting of long-serving leader Ali Bongo.
Amid a colorful parade of Gabonese tradition and military pageantry, President Nguema used his inaugural address to promise inclusive development, with a heavy emphasis on empowering Gabon’s youth, addressing security lapses, and improving water infrastructure. He also extended gratitude to the United Nations for supporting peace efforts and called on African leaders to pursue unity.
Vice President Shettima, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for Gabon’s democratic process. A statement from Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant on Media & Communications, emphasized Nigeria’s strategic interest in maintaining regional stability and fostering democratic governance across Central Africa.
The event drew fifteen African Heads of State, including leaders from Rwanda, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, reflecting continental solidarity for Gabon’s new chapter.
Shettima was accompanied by top government officials, including Dr. Aliyu Modibbo and Hon. Usman Bello Kumo. Following the ceremony, the Nigerian delegation returned to Abuja, marking a successful diplomatic engagement.
