In a major boost to Nigeria’s private tertiary education sector, the National Universities Commission (NUC) is set to issue provisional licenses to 11 new private universities today, Wednesday, at a formal event scheduled for 3:00 PM at the NUC auditorium in Abuja.
With this development, the total number of licensed private universities in the country rises to 159, reflecting the continued expansion of private participation in higher education despite earlier restrictions.
This update was communicated in a notice shared with media professionals on Tuesday evening.
Earlier in the year, the Federal Government temporarily paused new approvals for private universities. However, institutions that had reached advanced stages of processing were allowed to continue, provided they met all necessary academic and infrastructural standards.
